Engineering the Future: Living in our coastal city – challenges where the land meets the sea

This event will explore the pressures placed on our beaches, harbour, bays and estuaries, and what's being done to protect these assets.

Sydney is a coastal city comprising of beautiful beaches as well as a network of magnificent rivers, bays and an iconic harbour. These waterways define our harbour city in the east through to our parkland city in the west, but do we place enough value on these natural assets? Do we understand the risks posed by urbanisation and climate change? Are we prepared to take action to protect our freshwater and marine ecosystems?

Join our panel of experts for a lively discussion on the current status, future risks and measures to protect Sydney's waterways and beaches.

Ian

Professor Ian Turner, Managing Director of UNSW Water Research Laboratory and Deputy Head of School (Industry and Innovation) of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, UNSW Sydney

Professor Ian Turner is Deputy Head of School (Industry and Innovation) of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering and for the past 6 years has held the position of Managing Director of the UNSW Water Research Laboratory (WRL) located at the University’s Northern Beaches Campus in Manly Vale. Ian is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia and in 2020 was named by The Australian as the Australian Leader in the field of Ocean & Marine Engineering. His current research interests include measurement and modelling of coastal change and impacts of climate variability, coastal erosion control and coastal management.

Dr Mariana Mayer Pinto, Deputy Director (Undergraduate Teaching) for the Centre of Marine Science and Innovation & Scientia Fellow in the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Science, UNSW Sydney

Dr Mariana Mayer Pinto, is the Deputy Director (Undergraduate Teaching) for the Centre of Marine Science and Innovation & Scientia Fellow in the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Science. Her research focuses on how human impacts, such as contamination and urbanisation, affect the marine environment with the ultimate goal of developing evidence-based solutions for not only mitigating their impacts, but also restoring and rehabilitating marine ecosystems. She obtained her PhD in Marine Sciences from the University of Sydney, 2009 and holds a MSc in Zoology from Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Prior to the commencement of her academic career in UNSW in 2013, she worked as a private consultant, leading the data analyses of one of the biggest environmental projects in Australia (Gorgon Project, Chevron).

Sarah Joyce, Executive Officer, Sydney Coastal Councils Group

Sarah Joyce is the Executive Officer of the Sydney Coastal Councils Group, a collaborative regional organisation that advances sustainable management of Sydney’s urban coastal and estuarine environment. Sarah provides strategic leadership on issues and projects relating to coastal and estuarine management and is responsible for all negotiations with stakeholders including State and Federal Governments. Sarah has an extensive background in environmental planning, natural resource management, policy development and public consultation within local and state government.

 

Will

Dr William Glamore, Associate Professor, Water Research Laboratory, School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, UNSW Sydney

Dr William Glamore is an Associate Professor at the Water Research Laboratory, School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, UNSW Sydney. He leads a large eco-engineering research team focused on nature-based solutions to problems of over-development, climate change and pollution in rivers, estuaries, ports and wetlands. Dr Glamore has received several awards for his innovative on-ground solutions, which often focus on the large-scale de-engineering of the built environment.  In this talk, Dr Glamore will focus on the challenges we face in our tidal rivers and how targeted restoration provides an exciting solution to these issues.
