Student Emergency Response Fund
Many UNSW students are living with significant uncertainty and financial insecurity. Some are prohibited from returning home, and others are struggling to afford food and other basics. UNSW has a duty of care to protect the welfare of these students, and provide immediate support to assist them through this crisis
The Student Emergency Response Fund is a philanthropic initiative to provide financial aid to both domestic and international students who are facing hardship as a direct result of COVID-19.
Through this fund, we will provide needs-based financial assistance as a lifeline for students. This financial support will help students meet their basic needs, and ensure that they remain part of the UNSW academic community.
Your support will enable us to provide critical financial assistance to support more than 9,000 UNSW students in dire need.
Philanthropic investment will enable us to provide:
- Emergency support payments for domestic students valued at $500, which will be targeted to around 2,600 enrolled undergraduate students from low-SES backgrounds
- Emergency e-vouchers valued at $200, which can be redeemed at supermarkets to support at-risk domestic and international students meet their basic needs
- Emergency grants of up to $2,000 for domestic and international students with complex or multiple needs, including students with disability, housing issues, or carer responsibilities.
This is an initiative of the Division of Equity Diversity and Inclusion, and aims to support any student in demonstrated need, including indigenous students, international students and students from rural or regional communities. Donors can elect where they would like their gift directed.

The Dean of Built Environment’s Equity Scholarship
The Dean of Built Environment’s Equity Scholarship was established in 2019 by Dean, Helen Lochhead to enables students from a disadvantaged background to undertake an undergraduate degree in any discipline at UNSW Built Environment.
In addition to the Deans establishing and ongoing gifts, this scholarship is supported by the Built Environment academic and professional staff through staff giving.
The Scholarship is valued at $5,000 per annum and will be payable for the duration of an eligible undergraduate degree program. It is awarded based on equity considerations, and preference may be given to women, Indigenous students and humanitarian visa holders.

UNSW Indigenous Scholarships
Currently, First Nations people make up 3% of the Australian population but just 1.9% of the national undergraduate population at Australian universities, this number is closer to 1% at Go8 Universities. This represents a substantial missed opportunity to elevate our future Indigenous leaders across society and industry. Increasing the number of Indigenous students is a priority for our University, and is a core goal of the UNSW Indigenous Strategy.
By supporting the creation of scholarships tailored to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, you not only help to ensure more equitable access to higher education, but also will advance the representation of First Nations people across a broader array of societal and professional realms. Cancer Research: Validating an early detection test for ovarian cancer
There is currently no early detection test for ovarian cancer. As a result, 75 per cent of ovarian cancer is diagnosed at stage III or IV, making effective treatment almost impossible.
Right now, a team of UNSW researchers, led by Associate Professor Caroline Ford, are working to develop a test that will change how ovarian cancer is diagnosed.
By contributing to their work, you will be helping to make early detection a reality. Tumours that are detected at an early stage can often be surgically removed, significantly improving the prospects of women with ovarian cancer.

Wild Deserts’ Training Zone: Breeding smarter threatened species in the Strzelecki Desert
Wild Deserts is a UNSW research project that will help reintroduce seven threatened species to Sturt National Park. The project will establish a 'Wild Training Zone' inside the National Park, protected by ten kilometres of predator-proof fencing. Inside the Zone, UNSW researchers will use cutting-edge techniques to teach animals to be more aware of feral predators.
The Wild Deserts project needs your support. Your contribution will help us ensure that threatened species have a better chance of thriving when they are reintroduced to the wild. And it will give us a new understanding of how we can conserve species and restore our native ecosystems into the future.

MindFresh: Working Out Refugee Mental Health in Bangladesh
Research led by Dr Simon Rosenbaum at UNSW Medicine has found that simply including some basic physical activity in the treatment plans of people living with complex mental illnesses can have huge positive impacts. People in disadvantaged and marginalised communities are particularly likely to feel the benefits.
Dr Rosenbaum and his team are currently working in Bangladeshi refugee camps to train Rohingya refugees as Sports Therapists. Through those trainees, they will explore the impact that sport has on the mental wellbeing of one of the most vulnerable communities in the world.

Judge Bob Bellear Memorial Indigenous Residential Scholarship (Law)
The Judge Bob Bellear Scholarship honours the memory of the late Judge Bob Bellear and his tireless commitment to Indigenous justice. A 1978 UNSW Law graduate, Judge Bellear was NSW’s second Aboriginal barrister and the first Aboriginal Australian judge.
This scholarship extends the gift of opportunity back to the community for which he fought so fiercely. It provides support for the living, study and travel expenses of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students undertaking a degree at UNSW Law. On-campus accommodation is provided at Shalom College.

David Cooper Memorial Fund
Professor David Cooper AC was a respected HIV clinician, an internationally renowned researcher, and the founding Director of The Kirby Institute. David passed away in March 2018.
David's ground-breaking, collaborative research saved countless lives. His accomplishments were many, but he remained acutely aware of the need to address global health injustices. In particular, he believed it was unacceptable that infectious diseases continued to have a disproportionate impact on some of the world's most disadvantaged communities.

Redback Racing

Scientia Fellows PhDs
The UNSW Scientia Fellowship Program attracts the very best and boldest scholars to the University. The program takes a whole-of-career approach, providing Fellows with all the support they need to thrive professionally, both inside and outside the University, including taking on roles in industry, government and other research organisations.
The program was launched with great success in 2017, and led to the recruitment of some of the world's most talented researchers. By 2025, the University aims to have made 290 Scientia Fellowship appointments.

New Wave Founders

UNSW Water Research
The conservation and management of water is becoming a more urgent priority, especially given the challenges of population growth and climate change.
At the UNSW Water Research Centre, our focus is on improving the aquatic and atmospheric environments. Our multidisciplinary research generates new and better ideas about how we should handle our water resources, from civil hydraulics to coastal engineering through to waste management. We work closely with government and industry to ensure the solutions we develop have real-world value.

Paediatrics Neurology Research
Paediatric neurology research at UNSW is led by Michelle Farrar, an Associate Professor, and a specialist child neurologist at Sydney Children’s Hospital.

New Cancer Cure
Cellular immortality is one of cancer's most threatening characteristics. It is also the key to the development of a new kind of cancer treatment, generated by the work of the UNSW Cancer Cell Immortality Group.
The Group has delivered a world-first breakthrough with the development of a specific biomarker for one of the mechanisms that can activate immortality in cancer cells. It's called the Alternative Lengthening of Telomeres mechanism, or ALT mechanism for short.
The ability to identify and measure the ALT mechanism has led to the development of new ALT-targeted therapeutics and diagnostics. These new anti-cancer treatments are proving effective, while producing minimal side effects.
The Cancer Cell Immortality Group needs your investment. The support you provide will lead to further breakthroughs in cancer research, making a significant difference to the lives of people living with cancer, and their families.

Infectious Disease, Immunity and Inflammation
Infectious, inflammatory and immune diseases produce enormous suffering. They can also have a significant major economic impact, on individuals and on communities. Many conventional treatments are no longer effective, and new approaches are in desperate demand. We must urgently develop a better understanding of our immune system and how the body responds to infection.
UNSW Medicine researchers are expanding our knowledge of infectious, inflammatory and immune diseases. Our dedicated team has a track record of producing robust research, and overseeing its rapid translation into clinical practice and policy changes.

UNSW Orchestra and Wind Band
Since 1989, the UNSW Orchestra has been presenting live performances of fine music to the University community, and the residents of surrounding suburbs.
The Orchestra’s repertoire includes treasures of the Classical and Romantic eras, as well as the work of contemporary Australian composers. Concertos for various solo instruments figure prominently, commonly featuring student soloists from the University’s music department.
Founded in 1991, the UNSW Wind Symphony specialises in works written after 1900. The repertoire includes works from a variety of eras and styles, including jazz, popular music and art-music forms. More than 50 woodwind and brass players from the University community are members of the Wind Symphony.
Both the Orchestra and the Wind Symphony are centrepieces of UNSW cultural life. Your support will ensure they continue to enrich the student experience for many years to come.

Greek Australian Archive
The Greek Australian Archive celebrates the pioneers of the thriving Greek-Australian community, and preserves their history.
The Archive is the product of a collaboration between UNSW and the State Library of NSW, and houses the photographs, films, oral histories, personal letters and official documents of a generation of Greek migrants.
For students, scholars and the community, it provides insights into the lives of those that made their way to Australia in the 1950s and '60s. It tells their stories of adversity, strength and progress. And it gives us a valuable perspective on the Australian experience of migration and multi-culturalism.
Your support will help us to strengthen the Archive, including running programs to expand community access.

Kingsford Legal Centre
Over 14,000 people live in the Randwick and Botany Bay local government areas, many in large public housing estates. Established in 1981, the Kingsford Legal Centre provides quality legal services to community members who might otherwise not be able to access the help they need to navigate the legal system.
Experienced lawyers and volunteers work alongside UNSW Law students at the Centre. Every year, they help over 1,500 local people deal with matters of domestic violence, discrimination, housing, employment, criminal law and victims’ compensation.
The generosity of the community is vital to the survival of this critical social justice initiative. Your support means we can go on making quality legal care accessible to some of our most vulnerable community members. And it ensures that UNSW Law students continue to get valuable real-world experience.

Indigenous Law Centre
The Indigenous Law Centre (ILC) at UNSW is the only Indigenous law research centre in Australia.
Established in 1981, the ILC has long been an advocate for the legal rights and freedoms of Indigenous peoples. It conducts innovative and high-quality research into Indigenous legal issues. It provides Indigenous communities with legal education on issues of particular significance. And it produces the only two journals dedicated to Indigenous legal issues in Australia: the Indigenous Law Bulletin and the Australian Indigenous Law Review.

Community-Led Regeneration: Yuwaya Ngarra-li
The town of Walgett in far north-west NSW has been identifed as one of the most disadvantaged areas in Australia. First Nations people make up close to three quarters of the population. The recent drying up of local rivers has raised concerns about high sodium levels in local drinking water, and the high cost of healthy food.
Yuwaya Ngarra-li was established to address the social challenges embedded in the Walgett community. It is a community-led partnership, founded on the strengths and capabilities of the Dharriwaa Elders Group and UNSW.
Yuwaya Ngarra-li has a ten-year strategy for Walgett. It encompasses a range of projects, from micro-farms that promote social enterprise and provide training opportunities, through to initiatives that divert the town's young people from the juvenile justice system.
Your contribution will help realise the Yuwaya Ngarra-li strategy and break the cycle of disadvantage in Walgett. It will also support the development of a model that can be applied in other towns, empowering Aboriginal communities across the country to close the gap. Your support will be truly revolutionary.
